Serving Up Hope
What Is Your Program Name?
Our organization is called Serving Up Hope, whose mission is to harnesses the game-changing potential of tennis and education to transform the lives of underserved youth in communities worldwide.

Tell Us About Your Program
Led by two-time Grand Slam Champion, Vania King, we support over thirty programs in the United States and Uganda. Our programs in the United States focus on accessibility—getting racquets in the hands of kids that wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to. We partner with local community organizations, predominantly the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club, to offer fun introductory tennis programs for underserved youth.
Our program in Uganda focuses on multi-tiered development, from the entry point at the community level, where kids start to play for the first time, all the way up to high performance, where we offer tournaments at our own facility, STEM education, academic scholarships, girls mentorship, psychosocial support, legal education and nutritional support. Our Uganda program is located in one of the slums of Kampala, where most children do not get more than primary education and average salaries are $40 per month. The end goal for our participants is access to university —we believe that talent is universal, but opportunity is not.

How Did You Get Into Tennis?
“I got into tennis because my brother, who is 8 years older, and sisters, who are 2 years older, played. I was very competitive (I still am) so wanted to be just as good as they were. I got hooked by the individual aspect, where I could be out there and figure things out on my own, where the control of the game was in my hands”.

How Has The TopspinPro Helped Your Program?
I heard about TopspinPro from my team in Uganda, who saw videos of kids using the tool and felt that this would be a really helpful instructional modality in our program. Turns out they were right, the TopspinPro really helped our kids develop proper technique, in particular with their groundstrokes and serves.
