How To Prepare For Your First Pickleball Tournament
So, let’s break it down and look at some of the best ways to prepare for your first pickleball tournament. From training tips and match-day essentials to mindset strategies that will keep you focused and ready to compete, these tips will get you feeling ready:
1. Bring The Right Gear 🎒
The first prep on tournament day begins before you have even stepped out of the door. It's better to be over prepared and have too many supplies, especially if you are traveling in the car. A well-packed tournament bag can make the difference between feeling prepared or panicked. Here's some essentials to take on the day.
ESSENTIALS:
- Paddle & Backup Paddle plus Grips – It's crucial to have a backup paddle. I once had someone snap off a handle on mine by stepping on it! Also spare overgrows or grips can come in handy in case your grip gets dirty or sweaty.
- Pickleballs – Crucial for warming up with! Try to warm up with the same type of ball that you will be playing with.
- Water & Electrolytes – Stay hydrated to avoid cramping. Take at least two large bottles.
- Snacks – Not only do you need snacks but be prepared to be there for a full day. You will need enough food to keep energy levels up between matches and throughout the day.
- Towel – To keep your body and grip dry. Bring sweatbands if you are prone to sweating.
- Shoes & Extra Socks – Dry socks help with blisters. Talc can also help with this in between games. Make sure the shoes you choose are your most reliable pair and even take an extra pair if you have room.
- Hat/Sunglasses/Sunscreen/extra layers – Be prepared for extremes of weather.
- Cash - can be useful for buying snacks at the venue, for parking fees or lockers.
BONUS EXTRAS:
These are some non-essentials but useful for tournament day depending on your location:
- Chair - most players tend to take their own chair or stool to guarantee a seat
- Umbrella - Useful for getting shade. You can buy ones that clip onto your chair.
- TopspinPro - Great for warming up when no courts are available.
- Blanket - Great for keeping warm or sitting on.
- Cooler - great for keeping your drinks and snacks cool.
- Massage gun - helps keep the body loose during long days!
👉 Pro Tip: Pack your bag the night before so you don’t forget anything in the morning rush!

2. Know The Tournament Format 🏅
Pickleball tournaments have different formats, and knowing what to expect can help you mentally prepare ahead of the day. You may even want to practice various types of scoring ahead of time. Here's a few of the main types:
- Round Robin - Everyone plays multiple matches, usually against every team in the draw. The matches in this format tend to be shorter such as first to 11 or 15.
- Pool Play & Brackets - Similar to a round robin but players compete in separate smaller groups (pools). The top players from each pool then advance to knockout rounds.
- Double Elimination - You must lose twice before being eliminated. Losing your first match doesn’t mean you're out!
- Single Elimination - Lose once, and you're done, so every match counts!
👉 Pro Tip: Check the tournament rules and format ahead of time so you know exactly what to expect. Here's the Official USA Pickleball Approved Tournament Formats.
3. Train for Tournament Play 🔥
Practicing casually with friends during rec play is different from playing under pressure in a tournament. Make sure your training reflects real match conditions.
Practice Scoring
It's obviously common sense that you need to know how to score properly before entering a tournament, but it's also important to practice scoring under pressure. When you are overwhelmed in a new environment it can be easy to forget the score. Make sure when you are playing your practice matches that you are always following the score. Drill Under Pressure
Simulate game situations where you play points under tournament rules. Knowing the tournament format, as mentioned above, helps you prepare.
Play Against Different Opponents
Get used to different styles, speeds, and strategies. Mixing up your practice play will keep you on your toes and learn to strategize for the day.
Practice Doubles Communication
If playing doubles, work on clear partner communication and positioning. Not feeling nervous about who's covering the middle or standing where can keep things more simple on the day and not add any unnecessary extra worry.
Simulate Tournament Day
Tournaments involve playing multiple matches. Practice long sessions to build mental and physical endurance. Taking hikes can help you get ready for being on your feet for long periods.
👉 Pro Tip: Try playing practice matches with the same scoring format as your tournament so nothing feels new on game day.
4. Manage Tournament Nerves 🧘♂️
Nervous energy is normal, especially in your first tournament. The key is channeling it into focus and performance and also to know that everyone is nervous...you are not alone!! Here's some ways to help you relax.
✅ Remember to Have Fun: You play pickleball for enjoyment and it's not your livelihood. Enjoy the experience. Win or lose it's a journey of progress and learning. Take both your wins and losses and grow from them.
✅ Stick to Your Routine: Warm up the way you always do consistency builds confidence. Warming up properly also helps reduce adrenaline and your jitters.
✅ Control Your Breathing: Take slow, deep breaths before stepping on the court. This is especially important before serving or returning.
✅ Focus on One Point at a Time: Don’t think about winning or losing just play the next point. That's all you can try to control in the moment.
✅ Accept Mistakes & Move On: Everyone makes errors what matters is your response. Don't let one silly mistake ruin your whole game!
👉 Pro Tip: Watch a match or listen to music between games to keep your mind relaxed.
5. Have a Match Strategy 🎯
No matter what level you play at, going in with a game plan will help you play smarter, not harder. Keep it simple so you are not overwhelmed but try to get some solid basic strategy in place. Here's some examples.
Stay Patient
Don’t rush points, let your opponents make mistakes. Don't go for too much and keep it simple with your shot selection.
Target Weaknesses
Notice if they struggle with backhand shots, high balls or movement. Some players panic more when at the net so check for that too.
Control the Net
Pickleball is won at the kitchen. Be aggressive moving forward. Even the sight of you coming in can throw off your opponents.
Mix Up Shots
Try not to be too one dimensional. Use dinks, lobs, and third-shot drops to keep opponents guessing. Don't drive or drop every 3rd. Don't always send your dink to the same spot.
👉 Pro Tip: If something isn’t working, adjust your strategy mid-match instead of repeating mistakes. If something is working, stick with it!
Conclusion: Learn & Have Fun! 🤩
Your first pickleball tournament isn’t just about winning, it’s about learning, improving, and enjoying the experience. Competing in a tournament is one of the best ways to challenge yourself, discover new strengths, and gain valuable insights into your game.
