Why Do We Practice an “Illegal” Serve on the SpinPro?
The SpinPro is designed to help players develop proper spin mechanics, focusing on how to create slice and topspin effectively. However, some players have pointed out that the slice serve drill is illegal under pickleball rules.
Here’s why we teach it this way and how it translates into a legal serve in real play.
Why We Teach This Motion on the SpinPro
The SpinPro isolates the spin component, teaching players how to:
✅ Roll the paddle down the ball to generate backspin.
✅ Develop feel & control for adding slice to different shots.
✅ Improve spin biomechanics before blending in a full motion.
Why Is This Serve Technically Illegal?
❌ Rule Violation: Upward Swing Requirement
- USA Pickleball Rule 4.A.7.a states that the server’s arm must be moving in an upward arc at contact.
- The SpinPro does not include this upward motion, as it focuses on pure spin mechanics.
✅During a Real Slice Serve
During a real serve, you need to combine slice with forward and upward motion to make it both effective and legal. With a real slice serve, you must lift your arm on the follow through to clear the net. If you only use a chopping motion, the ball will go into the net.The screens are there to guide spin production, but once you master it, you should remove the screens and incorporate forward motion to complete the full serve.
